Title: Road ahead has its perils for Casey Stoner (The Times, 1 October
2009)

Contains: After two months on the sidelines and myriad medical tests, a
mystified Casey Stoner [motorcycle Grand Prix rider] returns to action this
weekend intent on showing that he is not washed up and burnt out at the age
of 23 .......... A team of specialists, including a consultant physician,
an endocrinologist and a cardiologist, have ruled out any heart or
neurological condition. The tests failed to find any virus, though, and the
only problems unearthed were a lack of sodium and low blood pressure.
Significantly, the doctors believe that Stoner=92s fatigue was caused by
overtraining ........ One MotoGP insider, who wished not be named, said
last night: =93The pressures on these guys to ride when they are not up to =
it
is huge. It=92s wrong and dangerous.=94 Stoner has been racing on the
grand-prix circuit since he was 15. By the age of 21 he was the second
youngest MotoGP world champion. One theory is that Stoner has been sufferin=
g
from ME or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), inviting a comparison to Peter
Marshall, the former squash player, who was world No 2 when his career was
wrecked by a mystery virus. That was diagnosed as CFS.
