What counts as depression?

These studies that say depression is co-morbid with CFS make me
wonder how they sort out depression from unhappiness. It seems to me
everyone with ME or CFS is bound to be unhappy some of the time --
and maybe almost all the time -- because they feel like crap, can't
participate in social activities, are likely to lose income and
wealth, perhaps to the point of pauperization, are isolated by their
disability, etc. People who write articles saying depression is
co-morbid need to list a standardized criteria for the diagnosis and
an explicit description of how the researcher differentiates between
depression and unhappiness.

Also, if ME/CFS neuroimmune disease precipitates a second disease,
e.g., depression, this should be the subject of a major research
effort that could discover valuable information not only on ME/CFS
but also on the origination of depression, which itself appears to be
a major public health issue in the US and elsewhere.
