Sir Peter to stand down as CEO
12 March 2012
Sir Peter Spencer has announced that he will stand down as Chief =
Executive of Action for M.E. by October of this year.=20
Under his leadership the charity has made significant progress with the =
major transformation envisaged in the strategic plan that he developed =
together with the trustees and staff, in consultation with people with =
M.E.
The search is now underway to find a worthy successor. Peter has agreed =
to stay until later in the year to be able to hand over to his =
successor.
Alan Cook, Chair of Action for M.E. said: "We shall miss Peter's drive =
and energy, but as he himself has suggested, successful organisations =
need regular change at the top to sustain momentum and to generate fresh =
ideas.
"Peter's stature, his standing with Government, prior experience as a =
CEO and, most importantly, his empathy towards people with ME has =
enabled us to materially raise our game despite our limited funding."
Peter served in the Royal Navy for 38 years. His appointments included =
Controller of the Navy, Second Sea Lord and Commander in Chief Naval =
Home Command. He then became Chief of Defence Procurement for four years =
from 2003. He joined Action for M.E. in 2007.=20
He is also a non-executive director at the Royal National Hospital for =
Rheumatic Diseases Foundation Trust in Bath and chairs the Audit =
Committee. He is chairman of the Bath Abbey Development Panel.
That Peter plans an active retirement was confirmed today by the =
announcement that he is one of 14 new Public Appointments Assessors =
appointed by Sir David Normington, Commissioner for Public Appointments. =
The part time PAAs, who will work four to five days a month, will assist =
him in upholding the principle of selection on merit in ministerial =
appointments to public bodies and statutory offices.
The new Assessors replace 157 Independent Public Appointments Assessors =
who operated under the previous system.
