NOT: Heart Abnormalities in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome By Adrienne Dellwo

Note: Atlhough cancer rates in ME and CFS patients are not well
studied, scientists do know that about 40% of cancers are caused by
viruses - possibly more. It is plausible to hypothesis that the link
between ME and CFS and cancer may be viruses - at least in some cases.

Heart Abnormalities in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
By Adrienne Dellwo, About.com Guide December 23, 2011

I see this statement a lot in connection with chronic fatigue
syndrome: "At least it won't kill you."

But is that accurate? Certainly, coroners aren't listing it as a cause
of death, but that doesn't mean it isn't.

A small survey of causes of death in chronic fatigue syndrome turned
up some disturbing facts:

The leading causes of death were heart failure, suicide and cancer.
All 3 were were more common than in the overall population and
happened earlier in life.

We know very little about the cancer association, other than that
there seems to be some similar immune issues possibly involving B
cells and T cells. It's an area that begs more research.

The suicide rate is, sadly, to be expected when you're talking about a
debilitating disease that robs you of quality of life and leaves you
open to scorn and ridicule because it's so misunderstood. The cure for
that? A better educated public and medical community plus a whole lot
more research into effective treatments.

When it comes to heart failure, though, we do have some studies to
suggest what things could be going on - including a new study
published this month that demonstrates some problems specific to
people with orthostatic intolerance (dizziness upon standing.)
