I'm sending this query on behalf of an Australian M.E. patient/patient
advocate. They write:
....
A M.E. patient is having trouble getting workers to fill her shifts &
this problem exists for all disabled clients in QLD. Staff are hard to
attract to the sector & even harder to retain.
I was told, "why would workers do the stressful often difficult job of
working as a carer when they get paid more with less stress &
responsibility working in a cafe."
Funded "clients are left without staff to fill shifts & repeatedly staff
simply do not turn up. No notice, nothing!!!"
From my experience I have found that Home Care has the best model as a
service provider, they pay the staff more, they are better trained,
fully briefed, they aim to match staff with clients & keep the same
staff members for a client, they have a high retention rate, have better
administrative & procedural systems & provide a consistently better
service though limited in scope by funding. They also provide staff a
career path.
I think that if this service was funded & allowed to expand to include
the more intensive services such as ______ needs, or was used as the
model for one that does, severely ill & disabled people would receive a
satisfactory service.
To those reading this...I'd like to know, what their experiences have
been, do they have any suggestions of service providers who provide
consistently reliable well briefed & trained staff?
Do they have examples of service providers that are good models of
service provision?

Thank so much for any input
