ACT: MRC not prepared to release List of Participants for CFS/ME Research Workshop

From Suzy Chapman

13 November 2009

The AfME/MRC joint Research Summit, first scheduled for April 2006 but
postponed following representations from outraged campaigning groups and
patients, finally took place in the November of that year.

The original Summit line-up of researchers and clinicians with backgrounds
predominately in psychiatry and psychology had been leaked in late 2005.

The line-up had included names like White, Sharpe, Chalder, Weardon,
Garralda, Morriss, Reid and Creed and read like the boarding list for the
2002 psych jolly to the island paradise of Rarotonga. (Yes, they really did
go there and I'm sure a good time was had by all.)

AfME had guarded the identities of those who had been invited to attend
these events as if this Summit had been convened not by the MRC, but by
MI5. In the annals of ME charity history, AfME's reluctance to cough up
with a list of those who attended this bash is eclipsed only by the
cephalopodan grip the ME Association maintains on its own Membership
Register.

The List of Participants for the AfME/MRC joint Research Summit was
obtained under FOI in December 2006, after the Summit had already taken
place.

I have received, this afternoon, a further response from Ms Rosa Parker,
MRC Corporate Information and Policy, in connection with my request for
information under FOIA around the November MRC CFS/ME Expert
Group Research Workshop.

Part of my response - a request for a copy of the List of Participants who
will be attending this meeting - was due for fulfilment, today.

The Agenda and some additional information has already been supplied.

Ms Parker's response follows:

[ The Revised Agenda with corrected times is available in PDF format at:

The MRC's response, 13 November:

"Further to my email of 11 November 2009 I am now able to reply with regard
to your request for:

2] A list of participants for this event

The MRC is intending to publish a list of participants for the workshop on
the 19th and 20th November alongside the note of the meeting. This will be
published on our website as soon as it is available following the workshop.
I will send you a link to this information as soon as it is available.

I have also attached a slightly revised copy of the agenda as there was a
small typographical error in the version I sent to you on the 11th of
November.

I hope that you are satisfied that your request has been handled
appropriately. If not, you may appeal using the MRC's complaints
procedure."

-----------

Well no, I'm not satisfied, and I'll be submitting an appeal on Monday.
