illness are a function of multiple factors involving biological,
psychological, and cultural domains, and their interactions - in other
words, the biopsychosocial model first posited by psychiatrist
Dr.George Engel in 1977.

The problem isn't necessarily with the model, but rather perhaps with
the inappropriate/flawed application of this theory based on theory
rather than empirical evidence.
Chronic fatigue 'more common in poorer people'
Chronic fatigue could be a family health concern as a busy lifestyle
can cause you to stop and ask questions as to whether your levels of
energy are due to exhaustion or something potentially more serious.
A recent British Medical Journal podcast discussed the diagnosis of
such chronic illnesses and the type of people most commonly affected.
Dr Simon Wessely, head of the department of Psychological Medicine at
the Institute of Psychiatry, claimed that chronic fatigue has
traditionally been seen in the media as something that affects the
young middle classes.
However more recent research shows that this is "a misnomer" and in
fact it is "actually more common in lower social classes".
Dr Wessely told listeners that rather than being a persistent viral
infection or muscle disease, it is now seen as a "multi-factorial
model for illnesses".
This means that over the last decade it has become more easily treated
by medical professionals, he later explained.
