Dear Dr Myhill,
With reference to your press release dated 10 August 2011[1], I
congratulate you on your successful campaign demonstrating that the
recent GMC disciplinary action against you was wholly unfounded and
unjustified. I do hope you will continue to expose and redress what are
widely viewed to be glaring faults at the General Medical Council. In
doing so you would be doing a public service way beyond the needs of
patients who were wrongly denied your caring services because of
repeated and questionable GMC actions against you. The GMC is supposed
to be a protector of high scientific professional standards. In my view,
as you have found out to your cost, it frequently is not. Instead I
believe the GMC all too regularly behaves like protection-racket
gatekeepers for big pharma, the establishment and their vexatious
proxies: bullying and attempting to reign in any doctor who steps
outside of their vested-interest treatment constraints - no matter how
scientifically and ethically justified throwing off such unwarranted
constraint is.
Frankly, it is about time the GMC lost its monopoly powers on licensing
and regulating medical practitioners in the UK as it appears to have
repeatedly failed in its responsibilities and abused the trust put in it
- as is so clearly demonstrated in your case. In my view the GMC can no
longer be relied upon to protect the public and is frequently a danger
to them. In your case, you successfully submitted your mitochondrial
work to scientific peer-review then ethically and successfully treated
many grateful patients accordingly: often, where patients had little
money, at cost price with your fees reduced or waived. Your work in this
respect was scientifically ground-breaking and professionally
outstanding. That the GMC appears to have colluded in attempting to stop
such ethical science-based patient care and bent its own rules in doing
so is a disgrace. In my view you deserve substantial financial
compensation from the GMC and the country and medical profession deserve
an alternative to this abusive and irresponsible medical monopoly.
