Minutes for both Day One and Day Two of the Spring CFSAC Meeting, held =
on 10-11 May 2011, are now available in PDF format on the CFSAC website. =
The Minutes are not yet available in html format:
http://www.hhs.gov/advcomcfs/meetings/index.html
On October 1, 2011, a "Partial Code Freeze" will be implemented for =
proposals for the forthcoming US specific, ICD-10-CM, a "Clinical =
Modification" of the WHO's international ICD-10. ICD-10 will be =
replaced with ICD-11 in 2015+.
For Day One of the Meeting, CFSAC Committee had tabled an hour's =
discussion around concerns for the long-standing proposal to retain =
Chronic fatigue syndrome in the "R" code chapter for ICD-10-CM, under =
"Symptoms, signs and ill-defined conditions."
I should like to thank Prof Lenny Jason for informing the Committee =
around ICD-10, ICD-I0-CM and ICD-11 proposals and for introducing =
committee members to the current proposals of the DSM-5 "Somatic Symptom =
Disorder" Work Group, which generated discussion of the potential =
implications for patients if these radical revisions to the DSM-IV =
"Somatoform Disorders" categories were to gain the approval of the DSM-5 =
Task Force. =20
I should also like to thank medical attorney, Steven Krafchick, for his =
insights and contributions to the discussions around the medico-legal =
ramifications for the ICD-10-CM and DSM-5 proposals for CFS, ME and FM =
patients.
Dr Wanda Jones' NCHS background document: "ICD-related questions" that =
had been prepared for the Agenda item can be found here:

The next public meeting of the ICD-9-CM Coordination and Maintenance =
Committee takes place on 14-15 September, 2011. Information on =
Coordination and Maintenance Committee processes in the run up to, and =
following the "Partial Code Freeze" for proposals for ICD-9-CM and =
ICD-10-CM can be found here: =
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/icd/icd9cm_maintenance.htm
The second public review of draft proposals for DSM-5 closed on July 18. =
A third public review of draft proposals is scheduled for =
January-February, 2012. I should like to thank all organizations, =
professionals and patients who submitted comment in this second public =
review. The APA has reported that over 2000 responses have been =
received across all sections of DSM, which is well down on last year's =
figure of over 8000 for the first public review of draft diagnostic =
criteria revisions - a possible reason for the APA's decision to extend =
the feedback period by an additional four weeks.
I shall continue to monitor the DSM-5 Development site closely for any =
revisions to current proposals by the "Somatic Symptom Disorder" Work =
Group and any edits and revisions made to the two key documents that =
accompany draft proposals made in response to feedback received in the =
second public review and following this summer's field trials.
